Spring Break at the Museum: Exploring Connections
Adèle Melot, communications officer

Taking a few days off for spring break? Make the most of it, wherever you are in Quebec, and take advantage of the many activities museums have to offer! With textile creations, programs for the whole family, collective projects, Quebec museums are proposing a spring break under the sign of forging links and tightly knit bonds... between threads as well as between individuals.
Showcasing Textiles
Do you love beautiful fabrics, sewing and needlework? Several exhibitions and activities invite you to discover the world of textile creation.
- At the Musée des métiers d'art du Québec, come and marvel at Louise Lemieux Bérubé's project featuring textiles by artists from around the world.
- In the exhibition Thresholdsat Musée d’art de Joliette, you move through a ghostly replica of the artist Jannick Deslauriers' apartment, which she has put together using textiles, steel, wax and dust.
- At the Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay in Montreal, installations, textiles, videos and sound compositions are shown alongside one another in Rituel du corps île, poésie du corps queer de Kama La Mackerel, where they encourage viewers to deconstruct dominant perceptions island territories that are marked by their colonial heritage.
- In Entrelacements : rencontres du regard at the art centre DRAC - Art actuel Drummondville, textile art is once again used as a vehicle to question social norms. The works by Damien Ajavon and Mikaël Lepage reveal plural, fluid and complex gender identities—far from heteronormative stereotypes
- Are you more of a hands-on person? This spring break Château Ramezay - Musée et site historique de Montréal, is offering an introductory workshop on the art of weaving a 'ceinture fléchée' (arrowed sash) every day from 11 AM to 4 PM. Come learn how to master this traditional technique, and leave with a beautiful woven key ring of your own! On Sunday, March 9th, craftspeople will be in attendance to share their thoughts and know-how with you.
The Power of the Collective
Just as interwoven fibres become more resilient, collaborative projects have the power to transcend individuals. It's in this spirit that some museums have chosen to honour the virtues of community collaboration.
- In Victoriaville, the Centre d'art Jacques-et-Michel-Auger is inviting young and old alike to participate in the cooperative modelling workshop "Matière à jouer", which will draw on the collective imagination to bring fantastic stories to life.
- Over in Saint-Damien-de-Buckland, the exhibition Super Héroïnes, presented by the Musée des Sœurs de Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours, focuses on the remarkable history of the women from this religious congregation to foreground the richness of community life.
- At Musée de la Côte-Nord in Sept-Îles, the exhibition Des kilomètres de temps recounts how the region's history and identity were shaped by the people of the North Coast. To add a playful touch to your visit, spin the "the discovery wheel", a perfect collaborative game for the whole family!
- In the exhibition Habiter la ruche at VOART, Centre d'exposition de Val-d'Or, Émilie B. Côté's artistic talent joins forces with that of worker bees, who collaborate to create fascinating honeycombs.
Memorable Family Moments
Finally, spring break can be an opportunity to create beautiful family memories. Here are a few activities you can enjoy with your little ones:
- At the Bioparc de la Gaspésie in Bonaventure, you will have a good chance to observe the animals in full action, whether it be during their meals or over the course of their training activities. A unique moment that is sure to captivate the whole family!
- Saturday, March 1st, come out for a family outing to admire the work of the sculptor Alex S. Girard at the Moulin seigneurial de Pointe-du-Lac site in Trois-Rivières, where he will let his imagination be his guide as the sculpts ice statues before your eyes.
- Are you looking for activities for your children? On March 5 at 9 AM, the Site Patrimonial de pêche Matamajaw in Causapscal is offering a reading of a story featuring fish as the protagonists, followed by an arts and crafts class.
- In Saguenay, the CNE - Centre national d'exposition is inviting families to draw inspiration from Sylvie Cloutier's exhibition Çà et là to imagine their own exhibition room in a miniature version. In the same city, on Wednesday, March 5, child-adult pairs are expected at La Pulperie de Chicoutimi - Musée régional where they will create their family tree with photographic illustrations. Make sure to sign up before February 28 at noon!
